Yes. Drop it straight in. Plotpane accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and camera raw — CR2, CR3, CRW, NEF, NRW, ARW, SRF, SR2, DNG, ORF, RAF, RW2, PEF, SRW, X3F, 3FR, ERF, KDC, MOS, MRW and IIQ — up to 25MB a file.
Be clear about what that is, because it is narrower than it sounds. We do not develop the raw. Every camera writes a full-size JPEG inside the raw file — the image its own screen shows you, and the one your operating system uses as the thumbnail — and that is what we render from. You get the camera's rendering of the scene: the picture style, white balance and tone curve it applied at capture. You do not get highlight recovery from sensor data, more dynamic range than the camera's own JPEG holds, or any of the latitude that is the reason to shoot raw in the first place.
What it buys you is one step less. A card full of CR3s goes in as it is, with no export pass in front of it.
When to export a JPEG yourself instead
- The frame needs real highlight recovery or shadow lift — that work happens on sensor data, in a raw converter, and no embedded preview carries it
- You want your own white balance or camera profile rather than the one the camera baked in
- The raw is over 25MB, which plenty of high-megapixel files are
- The file came off an older body that embedded only a small thumbnail. Plotpane refuses those at upload and says so, without spending a credit
Export settings, if you go that way:
- Lightroom: File → Export, Format JPEG, Quality 100, Resize: don't
- Capture One: Export → Variants, Format JPEG, Quality 100
- Canon DPP: File → Convert and save, JPEG, Quality 10
- Nikon NX Studio: File → Export, JPEG, Excellent quality
- Apple Photos: File → Export → Export Photo, JPEG, Quality Maximum
Keep the file under 25MB and you're set.
